Luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz has chosen to take a bold stance against new competitor Tesla Motors, but in an interesting department: solar batteries.
Obviously, solar batteries would be a popular area of development for automakers as consumers increase their demand for electric vehicles. As such, it looks like Mercedes-Benz is taking Tesla on, directly, by partnering with Vivint Solar to sell a more intelligent solar ecosystem to all residents of California. Of course, the main function of this initiative is to put pressure on Tesla in the place it calls home.
Indeed, Mercedes-Benz Energy Americas, LLC CEO Bors von Bormann notes, “As Mercedes-Benz electrifies its vehicle fleet, solar plus storage is essential to enable those vehicles to be powered by clean energy.”
In a recent report, the costs of this new consumer product—for intelligent homes (not just cars) of the future—will vary greatly. A simple battery setup could cost as little as $5000 or upwards of $13,000 for the more ambitious home owner.
Von Bormann goes on to say, “With batteries featuring the best in automotive engineering from Mercedes-Benz, and high-quality solar energy systems from Vivint Solar, our solution allows customers to take the next step toward a sustainable energy future. The launch of our home battery system in Europe has been successful and we are thrilled to be working with Vivint Solar to bring a reliable and compelling solar plus storage offering to American homes.”
In addition, Vivint Solar CEO David Bywater has also released a statement regarding their decision to partner with Mercedes-Benz. He discussed how the company felt that the luxury automaker has a high standard of quality that ensures the most excellent products that will make customers happy.
He puts it simply: “The choice to work with Mercedes-Benz Energy, a world-class innovator in energy storage, was an easy one.”
And then Bywater also goes on to say, “We believe their energy storage system is going to delight our customers and are impressed with their ambitious plans for the future. We look forward to bringing this innovative solution to consumers, beginning in our California markets, and to empowering greater renewable energy usage.”
